Swedish in Year 1: what Lärkompis practises
In Year 1 of Swedish school (around age 7), Lärkompis practises 19 skills in Swedish, linked to 10 of 22 items in the core content of Lgr22, the Swedish national curriculum, for Years 1–3. The areas are reading and writing; speaking, listening and conversation; and language use. Each skill has five difficulty levels, and the skills are practised in 9 mini-games, including Dörren med ordet (The Word Door), Glosjakt (Vocab Hunt) and Rätta roboten (Fix the Robot).
Lgr22 sets out core content for each stage (Years 1–3), not for each year. So Lärkompis spreads the skills across the years using its own time windows, and these are estimates. For Year 1, this means that 16 skills start this year and 3 skills started earlier and are still being practised. The figure 10 of 22 counts the items in the core content from Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education) that at least one skill links to; it does not mean the whole item is covered.

How to help at home with Swedish in Year 1
Year 1 is very much about the basics, and much of the learning happens through talk, play and short moments. Ten minutes on several days a week sticks better than one long session a week, because practice spread out over time is remembered better than practice all in one go. Read aloud together and talk about the text, even when your child reads on their own. Talking about what happened and why is part of the practice.
- Sound games in the car. Play “I spy something beginning with /s/” (the sound, not the name of the letter). Then switch: which word has the sounds /b/ /å/ /t/ (“båt”, boat)? The link between sounds and letters is the foundation of reading. As a game: about 5 minutes.
- Read aloud together every day. Read a book aloud for 10–15 minutes and let your child read a page or a sentence now and then. Pause and ask “what do you think happens next?”. Don’t stop when your child starts reading on their own; reading aloud builds vocabulary. When reading: about 15 minutes.
- Write notes and lists. Ask your child to write the shopping list, a card to Grandma or a note for the fridge. The spelling doesn’t have to be right; what they say is what matters. You can show the correct spelling later, without pointing out mistakes. Works in everyday life: about 10 minutes.
- Tell it with a beginning, middle and end. Ask your child to tell you about something that happened: first, then, finally. Ask an open question afterwards (“how did it feel?”). This practises storytelling, which later turns into writing. As a conversation: about 5 minutes.
How you can tell it has clicked in Year 1
- Blending sounds and decoding words: Your child sounds out words slowly and blends the sounds together.
- Letter combinations such as “ng”, “ck”, “tj” and “sj”: Your child reads words like “lång” (long), “nyckel” (key) and “sjö” (lake) without stopping.
- High-frequency words and sight words: Your child recognises “och” (and), “att” (to/that), “det” (it) and “jag” (I) straight away.
- Reading fluency through repeated reading: Your child reads the same text faster and more smoothly the second time.
Common pitfalls in Year 1
- Letter combinations such as “ng”, “ck”, “tj” and “sj”: Reads “k” before e, i, y, ä and ö as a hard “k” instead of the “tj” sound.
- High-frequency words and sight words: Sounds out words that cannot be sounded out, for example “jag” (I).
- Reading fluency through repeated reading: Reads too fast and skips words.
- Phonological awareness: the first sound: Answers with what the word means instead of how it sounds.
If Swedish practice in Year 1 often ends in tears or takes far too long, stop for the day and write a few lines to the teacher about what was hard. That is useful information for the school, not a failure.
Games that practise it
In Year 1 Swedish, Lärkompis uses 9 mini-games. In these games, playing is the practice, so your child learns while they play. There are no points or streaks, and no ads.
Dörren med ordet (The Word Door)
The picture and the word belong together, and every finished word opens a plank in the door. In Year 1, the game practises 6 skills: linking sounds and letters; blending sounds and decoding words; letter combinations such as “ng”, “ck”, “tj” and “sj”; high-frequency words and sight words; and more.
