Years 1–3
In the early years, maths is about understanding what numbers are and how they fit together, not just about calculating quickly. Your child should also get to talk, draw and try things out.
- Year 1: 20 skills, 10 mini-games, linked to 13 of 22 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; understanding and using numbers.
- Year 2: 25 skills, 13 mini-games, linked to 17 of 22 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; relationships and change; probability and statistics; understanding and using numbers.
- Year 3: 16 skills, 8 mini-games, linked to 12 of 22 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; probability and statistics; understanding and using numbers.
Years 4–6
In Years 4–6, numbers grow to include fractions, decimals, negative numbers and percentages, and simple algebra is introduced. Grades are given from Year 6.
- Year 4: 26 skills, 11 mini-games, linked to 14 of 27 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; probability and statistics; understanding and using numbers.
- Year 5: 39 skills, 12 mini-games, linked to 25 of 27 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; relationships and change; probability and statistics; understanding and using numbers.

Years 7–9
In Years 7–9, maths becomes more abstract: algebra, functions, percentages and change factors, geometry with proofs, and probability. The final grade in Year 9 affects which upper secondary school your child can choose.
- Year 7: 18 skills, 9 mini-games, linked to 16 of 28 items in the core content. Areas: algebra; geometry; problem solving; relationships and change; probability and statistics; understanding and using numbers.
