English in Year 6: what Lärkompis practises
In Year 6 of Swedish school (around age 12), Lärkompis practises 6 skills in English, linked to 9 of 18 items in the core content of Lgr22, the Swedish national curriculum, for Years 4–6. The areas are speaking, writing and conversation – production and interaction; listening and reading – reception; and communication content. Each skill has five difficulty levels, and the skills are practised in 6 mini-games, including Rätta roboten (Fix the Robot), Glosjakt (Vocab Hunt) and Minikorsordet (Mini Crossword).
Lgr22 sets out core content for each stage (Years 4–6), not for each year. So Lärkompis spreads the skills across the years using its own time windows, and these are estimates. For Year 6, this means that 0 skills start this year and 6 skills started earlier and are still being practised. The figure 9 of 18 counts the items in the core content from Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education) that at least one skill links to; it does not mean the whole item is covered.

How to help at home with English in Year 6
In Year 6, the first end-of-term grades (A–F) are given under the current rules, and there are national tests in maths, Swedish and English. The grade is based on the teacher's overall assessment, so talk about what your child can do and what the next step is, not just about the letter. Let English be part of everyday life: songs, TV programmes with subtitles and short conversations. Do not correct everything; respond to what your child says, so that they dare to speak.
- Read a simple book in English. Choose a picture book or an easy-to-read comic in English and take turns reading. Don’t look up every word; guess from the pictures first. Understanding the main content is enough. When reading: about 15 minutes.
- Play a game in English. Play a board game or card game where you say the instructions in English (“your turn”, “roll the dice”). Use a phrasebook or notes with helpful phrases. The focus is on making yourself understood. As a game: about 15 minutes.
- Explain a game in English. Ask your child to explain their favourite game or film to you in English, with simple words and gestures. Help with missing words (“how do you say…?”), but don’t correct the grammar. As a conversation: about 10 minutes.
How you can tell it has clicked in Year 6
- Question words, questions and short dialogues: Answers in a full sentence when someone asks them something.
- Prepositions of place: Uses “in front of” and “behind” correctly.
- Present simple with -s, “do/does” and “don’t/doesn’t”: Your child says “She plays” and not “She play”.
- Reading comprehension of short texts: Your child can retell an English text in their own words.
Common pitfalls in Year 6
- Question words, questions and short dialogues: Forgets “do/does” in questions.
- Prepositions of place: Translates word for word from Swedish.
- Present simple with -s, “do/does” and “don’t/doesn’t”: Forgets the -s after “he/she/it”.
- Reading comprehension of short texts: Answers from what they think, not from what the text says.
If English practice in Year 6 often ends in tears or takes far too long, stop for the day and write a few lines to the teacher about what was hard. That is useful information for the school, not a failure.
