English in Year 4: what Lärkompis practises

In Year 4 of Swedish school (around age 10), Lärkompis practises 5 skills in English, linked to 5 of 18 items in the core content of Lgr22, the Swedish national curriculum, for Years 4–6. The areas are speaking, writing and conversation – production and interaction; and communication content. Each skill has five difficulty levels, and the skills are practised in 5 mini-games, including Glosjakt (Vocab Hunt), Minikorsordet (Mini Crossword) and Ordsökaren (Word Search).

Lgr22 sets out core content for each stage (Years 4–6), not for each year. So Lärkompis spreads the skills across the years using its own time windows, and these are estimates. For Year 4, this means that 5 skills start this year. The figure 5 of 18 counts the items in the core content from Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education) that at least one skill links to; it does not mean the whole item is covered.

  • Everyday situations, interests, opinions, feelings and experiences.
  • Ways of life and social relationships in places where English is used, compared with the children’s own experiences.

How to help at home with English in Year 4

Year 4 starts the middle stage (Years 4–6). A new stage often means a new pace and more concepts in a short time, so give your child time and ask how the new things feel, rather than how many they got right. Let English be part of everyday life: songs, TV programmes with subtitles and short conversations. Do not correct everything; respond to what your child says, so that they dare to speak.

  • Play a game in English. Play a board game or card game where you say the instructions in English (“your turn”, “roll the dice”). Use a phrasebook or notes with helpful phrases. The focus is on making yourself understood. As a game: about 15 minutes.
  • Read a simple book in English. Choose a picture book or an easy-to-read comic in English and take turns reading. Don’t look up every word; guess from the pictures first. Understanding the main content is enough. When reading: about 15 minutes.
  • Explain a game in English. Ask your child to explain their favourite game or film to you in English, with simple words and gestures. Help with missing words (“how do you say…?”), but don’t correct the grammar. As a conversation: about 10 minutes.

How you can tell it has clicked in Year 4

  • Vocabulary: days of the week, months and daily routines: Your child knows the rhyme for the days of the week and the months.
  • “Can” and “can’t”: Your child says “I can swim” and “I can’t sing”.
  • Plural nouns: Your child says “two children” and not “two childs”.
  • The verbs “be” (am/is/are) and “have” (have/has): Corrects themselves when they use the wrong form.

Common pitfalls in Year 4

  • Vocabulary: hobbies and places: Thinks “library” means “bokhandel” (bookshop).
  • Vocabulary: days of the week, months and daily routines: Writes “monday” with a lower-case letter.
  • “Can” and “can’t”: Says “She can swims”.
  • Plural nouns: Overuses -s (“mans”, “foots”).

If English practice in Year 4 often ends in tears or takes far too long, stop for the day and write a few lines to the teacher about what was hard. That is useful information for the school, not a failure.
